Entrance to the churchyard

  • Description

"The church of St Michael and All Angels in the town centre at Houghton-Le-Spring. Originally this archway was the gatehouse of the rectory and stood on the opposite side of the road. In the 1940's, the rectory was demolished but the gatehouse archway was re-erected in this new position. The 4 shields represent 3 famous former vicars and the See of Durham."
