    1/2 The first part of this short biography of George Stephenson, up to the time of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It covers his early life and his development as an engineer, mechanic and inventor. He was a complicated man but a natural genius in his development of his own ideas and the ability to make other people's ideas work effectively. Due to time restrictions it has had to be cut short of the full story concerning the safety lamp and his dispute with Davey.
