Gertrude Bell: A Khatun Riding By

  • Description

A play by Pete Thomas Cast: Gertrude Bell -- Dawn Ivison Richard Doughty-Wylie/Frank Lascelles -- Rob Clilverd Frank Stafford -- Jack McBride Hugh Bell -- Ray Burton Percussion -- Ronnie Burke Guitars -- Richard Pink Vocals -- Scarlet Pink This play is based on the life and death of Gertrude Bell, an explorer and Arabian expert. She died in Baghdad in 1926 and it was never clear whether she died from an accidental overdose or she took her own life. One of the themes of this play is an attempt to find out what happened and why. Gertrude Bell joined the Arab Bureau in 1915, she was at the Paris Peace Conference and played a large and important part in the creation of Iraq. The other great event of her life was her relationship with Richard Doughty-Wylie VC, who died leading his troops ashore at Gallipoli. The relationship was complicated by the fact that he was a famous married man.
