  • Description

JESMOND SCOUTMASTER-GUNNER'S DEATH Gunner James Hair of the 1st Battalion Royal Field Artillery, and the second son of Mrs. J. Hair, 11, Victoria Crescent, Sandyford Estate Newcastle, has died at Armstrong College, after an illness extending over ten weeks. Gunner Hair was a native of Galashiels, but well-known in the Jesmond District. He was only 21 years of age. He was a keen follower of the Boy Scouts' movement in the district, and was the late Scout Master for the 1st Jesmond Troop connected with St. Barnabas' Parish Church, Newcastle. Before the war the late Gunner was with the firm of James Deuchar, Ltd., Eldon Square, as clerk for about five years. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 15th of March 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images please comment below.
