CONSETT OFFICER ON H.M.S. OCEAN Engineer-Lieutenant Frank Ainsworth, youngest son of Mr. Geo. Ainsworth J.P., general manager of the Consett Iron Co., Ltd., who was on the ill-fated Ocean when she was sunk by a floating mine in the Dardenelles. Engineer-Lieut. Ainsworth had been in the Navy for about 24 years. He joined when 15 years of age, and received his training at Keyham College, Portsmouth. He was transferred to the Ocean at the Spithead Review, just before the outbreak of hostilities. The Ocean was in the Persian Gulf and the Suez Canal prior to entering into action on the Dardenelles. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 21st of March 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
