BRAVE DURHAM SOLDIERS Sergt. George Napier, 1st Battalion Border Regiments, who lives at 15, Hopper Street, Houghton-le-Spring, has been awarded the D.C.M. for bravery on April 25, in landing at the Gallipoli Peninsula, and has been congratulated by Lieut. General Hunter-Veston, commanding the 29th Division. On the day he won this distinction his first child, Georgina, was born. His wife is the eldest daughter of Mr. Charles Clark, of Houghton-le-Spring. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 23rd of June 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
