WASHINGTON METHODIST CHURCH BROTHERHOOD'S PATRIOTISM. The Washington Station United Methodist Church Brotherhood has responded nobly to the country's call. Out of a membership of 52, the number that responded was 41. Only 2 failed to pass the army medical examiner, and 35 out of the 39 accepted are single men. One has since met his death on the battlefield, and at present about 18 are on various battlefields in France, Belgium and the Dardanelles. The others are in training with the regiments they are attached to. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 19th of August 1915. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
