Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead

  • Description

"Built 1914-17 by Arthur Stockwell to house the art collection of wealthy local solicitor and art collector, Joseph Ainsley Davidson Shipley (1822-1909). From 1884 until his death, he leased Saltwell Park House, now known as Saltwell Towers. One of the best known paintings in the collection is “Blaydon Races” by William C. Irving, 1903 which captures the spirit of the traditional Blaydon Races immortalised by the Geordie Ridley's Geordie folk song. The painting was saved for the region at auction in 2002. The gallery has become established as a national centre for contemporary craftwork. and also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions often in collaboration with London's V&A Museum. From October 2009 to January 2010 an exhibition features the rise of the Motown Record label, 'The Story of The Supremes', with costumes from Mary Wilson's collection."
