BENSHAM SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION. Pte. William Albert Parkinson, aged 28, of 8, Macadam Street, who was the in the 4th Batt. City of London Royal Fusiliers, was killed at Mons, on Sunday, August 23. Pte. Parkinson, who leave a widow and two daughters, was employed by the Newcastle and gateshead Gas Company for nine years. His father was 22 years in the army, and served during the Boer War. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 16th of October 1914. During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past. The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925.
