The village of Cotherstone is at the eastern edge of the parish, close to the wooded banks of the rivers Tees and Balder. The village lies some three miles upstream of Barnard Castle....A large part of the parish falls withing the North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and is sparsely populated by isolated farmsteads....The village of Cotherstone, a designated conservation area, with several listed buildings, is a cluster of mainly stone built houses with three village greens..."
