During World War II

  • Description

World War II Whitley Road is a road in holystone, it used to be a main road. It is near the Industrial Estate. If you look out one of the back windows from my house you can see the road. During the war this road was painted blue to make the enemy think it was the River Tyne. Therefore they would bomb that instead of the actual River Tyne where the food would be coming in for the country. This means that they would have to do less rationing and would be able to have more food. Obviously there were no were no houses built back then next to that road or even if there was they would all be evacuated to the countryside. In World War II, also known as the Great War, there were many children about and they had to be evacuated into the countryside because the city was being bombed. If they were in the city whilst the bombs were going off they would have a very high chance of being killed especially if a bomb was dropped near where they were living. Some children’s parents did not want their child to leave home because they would be going to a strange place with strange people that they did not know. However sometimes it was just because they would miss their child too much and wouldn't be able to see them. At this point they did not know how long this Great War was going to last so they kept them at home in secret so they could see them and keep them safe. Even though it wasn't actually safe they still made the choice of keeping them at home. My Nanna was born during World War II. Surprisingly, she was born in an air raid shelter and any point during this time a bomb could have hit them but luckily it didn't.
