Description
Q: Why is this place special to you? A: As a young girl I grew up in Wallsend, seeing ships like this was an everyday occurrence. I can remember being outside the entrance to the Ship Yards when the siren went off to call an end to the days shift and seeing hundreds of men come marching out and up the street home for their tea. This was quite a frightening sight when you are young, when everyone is rushing past you. Q: What was it like when you were my age? A: It was great fun, you knew everyone in the street and we all played out together. Hopscotch was a favourite, but we never had any chalk, you had to find a stone that was soft enough to make a mark on the street. I could hear the school bell ringing in a morning from my back door, and would then run to school only a street or two away. Q: Have you got any interesting stories or information about it? A: We all had coal fires and coal bunkers in our backyards, whilst playing out one day whilst peering into someone’s coal bunker across the back lane, the lid slammed shut and ripped most of my bottom lip off. My aunt ran with me in her arms to The Green, which was a hospital then and the doctor stitched it back on. -
