Folkworks Piece, 1986

  • Description

Music, and accompanying history, for a piece sent to the magazine Folkworks (now based at the Sage in Gateshead), in November 1986: 'Newcastle is an old tune from the seventeenth century... A special dance for which it was played was popular all over England for many years. Folk dancers and Morris dancers still perform it today.' 'Farewell to the Dene was written in the 1970s by Willie Taylor. He was a shepherd and the tune marked his retirement from a farm at Middleton Dene, near Wooler.'
