Text Appearing Before Image: sq.), Mellerstain (G. Baillie, Esq.) Home Castle, which forms soconspicuous an object in the distant landscape, was long the residence ofthe powerful Earls of Home. After the battle of Pinkie, in 1547, it wastaken by the English under the Duke of Somerset, and again during theCommonwealth by Cromwell. The Earl of Homes modern seat is theHirsel, one and a half miles west of Coldstream. Ednam, the birth-placeof Thomson the poet, is two miles north of Kelso, on the banks of theEden. Kelso to Berwick-on-Tweed. [By Railway, 23* miles] The line from Kelso to Berwick, which is a branch of theYork, Newcastle, and Berwick Railways, follows the southernbank of the Tweed. At the distance of two miles from Kelso,are the station and village of Sprouston, where passengersmay also leave for Kelso. On the left is seen the Tweed, whichnow forms the boundary between England and Scotland. Tothe left of Carham Station is Carham Church, with CarhamHall.
