W Gardiner who risked his life to save his pony in the Stanley pit disaster. The pony was presented to him by Mr J H Burns the owner of the pit. (West Stanley Colliery - Burns Pit Disaster) The West Stanley pit disaster was caused by an explosion and claimed the lives of 168 men and boys.
