Hartlepool Magnesia Works, 1958

  • Description

We've had a delve into our extensive photographic archive and unearthed these gems of the Steetley Magnesium works in Hartlepool. Hartlepool Magnesia Works, 1958 - No 1 Sand Trap and No 2 Storage Tank - prior to construction of the Jetty and Caisson (1961 extensions), the seawater pumps operated tidally and were unable to pump water once the main suction pipe was exposed. Excess water was stored when the pumps were on line into two storage tanks which were then depleted at low tide when the pumps could not be used - thus sustaining operations.
