  • Description

Old King Coal which was held from 27th March - 30th March 2014 marked the start of our spectacular Great North Festival of Transport. On Saturday 29th March it was the grand opening of the Pit Pony Stables. Led by a grand parade of brass bands and miners banners from The Town to the Pit Village, the Stables were opened by three former Pit Pony Keepers, Bill Tubman, Martin Gallagher and Tommy Clifford. The Beamish pit pony stables are a replica of an exisiting block which served Rickless drift mine in Gateshead and serve to illustrate the role played by horses in a North East colliery in the years leading up to the First World War.
