  • Description

The image shows the female scholars at the St. Johns Church School in Sunderland. possibly in Vine Street. The majority of the children are without shoes and this shows the level of poverty in the East End at the time. At this time the child mortality rate was near 30% and the East End averaged 6 families to a house.
