LIL 159 -Cholera Port Closure Decision 1831

  • Description

As cholera was running through the town, the surgeons and doctors, under pressure from the Gentlemen of the town ,claimed that there was not cholera in the town. and such a suggestion they say is a "wicked falsehood". Doctors Kell and Clanny refuse to attend. The meeting is reported nationally and causes a scandal. Other towns start to boycott Sunderland. Doctor Kell responds by putting his own barracks, home of the 82nd regiment under strict quarantine and not a single man falls sick.
