    In the early hours of Friday the 6th of October 1854,the north east of England witnessed the almost total destruction of the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides as a mighty explosion and the resulting fires tore through the workplaces and communities that lived and worked on and near the river, when it was all over 53 people would be dead, hundreds injured and the area decimated.
