Stephenson Railway Museum - Metrocar Front end

  • Description

Tyne and Wear Metrocar front end. Seen next to former North Eastern Railway Motor Luggage Van, used on the North Tyne Loop and dating from 1904. The Metro cab, as far as I know, was supplied by Metro-Cammell and was originally used in a mock-up of a Metro underground platform constructed for evaluation in a disused sub-station near Manors (an old Newcastle Evening Chronicle article confirms this). It was latterly used as a touring exhibition used on school visits etc. It was 'retired' and handed over to the Stephenson Railway Museum as part of Metros' 20th Birthday celebrations.
