Artist Julia Vogl's Connect10 installation at the Discovery in Newcastle

  • Description

Julia Vogl was one of ten artists featured in Culture24's Connect10 competition, the public vote taking place in March and the event in May 2013 as part of Museums at Night. Julia's intervention involved the Newcastle public donating 2,5000 recycled plastic bottles to the project. She then asked visitors to the Discovery to choose a coloured piece of paper aligning themselves with an area around Newcastle. This was inserted in the empty bottle and the bottle strung up as part of a giant jellyfish-like chandelier hung around one of the old lamps in the Discovery's Great Hall. The overall effect, as this time-lapse film shows was both beautiful to behold and also a visual indicator of visitor's geographical identity. May thanks to Julia Vogl, Lindsey Bruce and everyone at the Discovery for their help on the project and the making of the film.
