Durham Miners Gala, 21st July 1951

  • Description

The grief-stricken faces of Easington Public Band standing in front of the colliery banner in North Road, Durham City. The bandsmen on the far left is Billy Winter, behind the youg mascot on the right is Richard Black. Two other members are Tommy McGarry and Tommy Scott. Less than two months earlier, 83 men (including two rescue-workers) from the colliery had lost their lives in an explosion. The pennant hanging from the banner was taken from a wreath which was sent from the miners of Yugoslavia and is still attached today (2002).
