Winding Men Signals - Settlingstones Witherite Mine, Northumberland
-
Description
Hand painted steel sign giving special signals for winding men at Settlingstones Witherite Mine. Size 510 x 431mm. Settlingstones Mine was opened in around 1690, originally a lead producing mine but in it's later years became one of the world's largest witherite producing mines. It finally closed in 1969 with the vertical seams of witherite having been mostly worked out. As with a lot of our archive photographs, sometimes we don't always know the full information so if you can offer any further information or fill in any gaps, please do!
