Durham Big Meeting / Miner's Gala (Archive)

  • Description

Durham Miners Gala, 24th July 1937 - the creche on The Racecourse, a welcome addition for the miners wives. This was the first time it had been introduced to the Gala. The idea for this was the brainchild of Mrs Hesther Alington, wife of the Dean. She and her friends made themselves responsible for the organisation, which was later taken over by the Mothers Union.
