    Type : Lantern Slide Description : A view of the Bigg Market Newcastle upon Tyne taken c.1900. A rally is taking place in the Bigg Market which is crowded with people. A woman appears to be addressing the crowd which includes both men and women. The Town Hall and part of the Rutherford memorial fountain can be seen in the background.The memorial fountain to the temperance reformer Dr J.H. Rutherford was unveiled in September 1894. It was moved to the Bigg Market in 1902 and was the focus for political meetings. The old Town Hall was built 1858-63 and was demolished in the 1960s.
