Hollon Fountain, Oldgate/Market Place, Morpeth

  • Description

On the death of his wife Mary Hollon who originated from the town, Thomas Hollon set up a trust fund in her memory and the affection they both shared for the town of Morpeth. Four years later, in 1885, the fountain was erected by the people of Morpeth to honour Thomas Hollon and his generosity. The trust fund paid for an annual treat, bringing food and warmth to the townsfolk who were awarded grants. Sacks of coal were provided along with an invitation to a meat tea in Morpeth Town Hall on November 5, the date of the Hollon's marriage. The trust fund continues to this day. The fountain, which is made of granite and rests on a rusticated base with a Victorian lamp standard above, was moved to its present location in 2013 following its demolition 2 years earlier when a car crashed into it at its previous nearby location. The fountain is Grade II Listed. Photo by Geoff Holland, 3 July, 2025, Geograph, CC-BY-SA 2.0
