Ring & Bailey, Fozy Moss

  • Description

A Scheduled Monument consisting of a ditched enclosure situated on a small knoll in boggy land (Fozy Moss) north of Hadrian's Wall. It is usually interpreted as a medieval moated site or some kind of motte or ringwork but may be a prehistoric enclosure of unknown function. A pond dug into the northern end of the monument is possibly a post-medieval fish-pond NY8170 : Pond within Ring & Bailey enclosure, Fozy Moss. A low bank that runs away west from the enclosure had been claimed as a causeway linking the site to the medieval manor of Sewingshields and Sewingshields Castle, but is more probably a post-medieval sodcast boundary.
