Newburn Station

  • Description

......The station was west of the Newburn Bridge Road level crossing. The platform buildings were as unpretentious as those of the other North Wylam loop stations. The up platform had a range of wooden buildings, with only one on the down platform, reflecting the need to provide facilities for Newcastle-bound passengers rather than for the few to Heddon-on-the-Wall or North Wylam. A non-standard iron footbridge on brick piers bisected the platforms, and, with the tall NER signal box at the crossing, was the station’s dominant feature. Nearby sidings served the Throckley Coal Company’s Maria Pit; Spencer’s iron and steel mill and rolling works; North Walbottle Colliery; Newburn Hill sand and gravel site; and Newburn Waterworks.....
