The Pennine way 109.

  • Description

Whitley castle [Epiacum].....The Pennine way passes the grassy ramparts of this Roman fort built to defend a road linking the Stanegate at Carvoran with Watling street at Kirkby Thore.Known as the Maiden way, this road was probably laid about AD80 ,after Agricola had blazed a trail northwards to crush the Barbarians.....It is fascinating to see how dry stone walls cut across the fort as if it was not there, for centuries farmers and the rest of society had a total disdain for history and apparently worthless relics.
