-
Description
"....Ebchester is situated approximately 12 miles west-south-west of Newcastle-uponTyne, 14 miles north-west of the City of Durham and 2½ miles north of Consett in County Durham, on the banks of the River Derwent, which forms the boundary between County Durham and Northumberland. It is a small rural village with an extensive and fascinating history, which dates back to at least Roman times. The conservation area covers an area of approximately 24½ hectares of the historic core of the village, centring on Front Street, where the remains of the Roman fort of Vindomora, the medieval parish church of St. Ebba and a collection of 18th and 19th century buildings, many of which are listed, can be found. It extends up Ebchester Hill as far as Prospect House and St. Mary’s Convent...." -
