Hadrian's Wall near Busy Gap

  • Description

"King's Wicket is the name of the wicket gate in the line of Hadrian's Wall in Busy Gap [[3122850]]. On the north side of the Wall here is a large triangular earthwork formed by an earthen bank with a superficial ditch, partly based on the Wall ditch, with a possible entrance lies at the north-west corner [[1788558]]. The feature is thought to be a stock enclosure associated with a traditional drove road running through the Wall at this point. The date is uncertain, but in the late Middle Ages Busy Gap was a notorious haunt for bandits and raiders, known as 'Busy Gap rogues', and the stock held in the enclosure may not always have been there with the owner's consent. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/learn/story-of-england/stuarts/1780678/" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2018.
