Monument Number 10085

  • Description

....Hob Uid: 10085 Location : Cumbria Allerdale Bowness Grid Ref : NY2302062720 Summary : Site of a Roman temporary camp visible as a cropmark. It occupies level ground on the seaward edge of a low cliff at about 4 m above OD and 650 m E of the fort of Bowness-on-Solway (Maia). The course of Hadrian's Wall passes about 190 m to the SW of the camp. The S side and parts of the E and W sides are known, but any NW angle may have been destroyed by erosion and the NW quadrant of the interior is largely overlain by the modern house called Grey Havens. The layout is not quite regular, for the SW angle is slightly obtuse. There is a hint on the aerial photographs, too faint for plotting, that the E side begins to turn a corner near the cliff edge, but the indications are largely obscured by the plough headland at this point. The E side therefore may have extended to about 74 m and the total area enclosed would have been at least 0.6 ha (1.5 acres). The single gates in the E and W sides are each guarded by a traverse, the ditches of which were set approximately 10 m out from the perimeter. Grey Havens appears to have been built in the late 19th century on the site of a mound, perhaps a barrow (NAR NY 26 SW 5). There is now no trace of this, though a rise 0.8 m high on the edge of the cliff immediately N of the house may be part of the mound. To the W of the camp, cropmarks of ridge and furrow are visible.
