Site of Milecastle 14 above March Burn

  • Description

"Milecastle 14 (MC 14) survives only as a low platform crossed by Hadrian's Wall Path in the field just south of the Military Road which was built on the line of the Roman Wall. Investigated in 1946, it was found to be a short-axis milecastle approximately 60 ft wide with broad side walls. Its south gate had been destroyed by stone quarrying and plough damage and the north gate had been blocked. Further examination for the Milecastles Project in 2000 detected the remains of an internal building on the west side and later reuse of its platform for a likely field barn. The milecastle was situated on high ground marking a bend in the Wall line and would have been an ideal location to control a weak point at the crossing of the March Burn, west of Vindobala Roman Fort (Rudchester).
