The Jovial Sailor, Caldcotes

  • Description

"The name of this pub dates from the time when Carlisle had a ship canal - the basin was maybe 200m left of this location. An old painting http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/carlisle-canal-basin shows some quite large sailing vessels, which were towed here by horses from the other end of the waterway at Port Carlisle [[933220]] . The Carlisle Canal was operational from 1823-1853, it closed for economic reasons and was replaced by a railway. The present pub was built around 1903, on the same block as the original Jovial Sailor, which was demolished (information from Carlisle Breweries and Public Houses 1894-1916 by S.Davidson http://www.p3publications.com/page23.htm )."
