English Heritage information board relating to Turret 41a near Caw Gap on Hadrian's Wall

  • Description

"The info board amusingly contrasts the life of soldiers manning this possibly three-storey turret on the northernmost outpost of their empire with a portrait of the Emperor Septimius Severus and his family, who almost certainly lived in rather more comfort than the troops defending their wealth and power. The board also speculates that there may have been a pitched wooden roof on the top of the tower to aid rainfall drainage rather than the castellated flat roof arrangement portrayed."
