Excavating Banks East Turret

  • Description

Amateur excavation of the Banks East Roman turret, 7 October 1933. The N face of the turret is visible; the modern road runs over the exposed stone to the viewer's L. "A cist, foreground (a tomb consisting of a stone chest covered with slabs) which was discovered on Hadrian's Wall" From Marleen Morgans, daughter of the man on the bicycle in the background (2014): "I think Cumbria County Council funded the excavation. From what I remember the road went over or close to the turret and had to be re routed. A skeleton was found plus pieces of pottery etc. I am guessing that the photograph was published in the Cumberland News or Carlisle Journal?"
