Wall Mile 49: Birdoswald

  • Description

    Sandstone altar to the hunting god Silvanus, from Birdoswald. This is RIB 1905 which reads Deo Sancto / Silvano ve/natores / Banniess(es) or 'Sacred to the god Silvanus, the hunters of Banna (set this up)'. Banna is now generally accepted to be the Roman name of Birdoswald. Now in the site museum.
