Hadrian’s Wall at Mile Castle 42/Cawfields
-
Description
"Just left of centre is Cawfields Lake in the former Cawfields Quarry. In operation from 1902 to 1952 for extraction of roadstone, the quarry destroyed a section of Hadrian’s Wall. https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1010975?section=official-list-entry Apart from that, this section of Hadrian’s Wall is well preserved https://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=15324&resourceID=19191 and reaches an elevation of 345 m/1,132 at Winshield Crags, https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/750970 3.2 km/2 miles east of Cawfields Lake. That’s the highest point of the entire wall. https://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/walk/winshield-crags-cawfields/ The Pennine Way runs along this section of Hadrian’s Wall and Cawfields is also notable as a Dark Sky Discovery Site that’s ideal for stargazing within the larger Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. https://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/things-to-do/discover-dark-skies/" Photo by Martin Jeffries, 2017. -
