Chester-le-Street

  • Description

The consolidated remains of the centurion's quarters immediately north of the parish hall extension. The cobbling represents the lines of the via sagularis and via vicinaria. The stones of the building itself were set in mortar specially formulated to look like the clay in which they were set, a 'first' for the English Heritage masons (this was before they were abolished by EH and all subsequent work contracted out).
