London Midland & Scottish Railways LMS Ports - advert, 1939

  • Description

Like the other "big Four" railways the LMS owned quite extensive port facilities although, oddly given their operating area and industrial base, their ownership wasn't as extensive as the LNER (they issued a maginificent annual "Ports Book", replete with plans that reputedly were most useful to the Luftwaffe later in the year this advert was issued). Anyhow, here are descriptive paragraphs on what was available at Garston (Liverpool Docks being the concern of the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board), Barrow-in-Furness (developed byt he old Furness Railway), Fleetwood (which is indeed noted as the permier fishing port on the English West Coast), Grangemouth as well as Ayr and Troon in Scotland. The three ports for Ireland - Holyhead, Heysham and Stranraer are an afterthought.
