Railway arches, Abbots Road, Gateshead

  • Description

"This was the boundary wall of the old Oakwellgate station, "situated on a 32ft high artificial mound surrounded on three sides by a brick and masonry retaining wall, that on the north side having 12 arched recesses which were intended to be let as warehouses". The station opened c.1844 with passenger services of the Brandling Junction Railway, but by the 19th century with railway bridges having been built across the Tyne, it was already only used for goods.
