Catton Sep 1981

  • Description

One of two bastle buildings at Old Town, near Catton. In the Northumberland HER (1995) Peter Ryder references it as ‘Wester Old Town’ to differentiate it from the ‘other’ Old Town bastle. The farmer had recognised its historic value but applications for restoration grants were unsuccessful and the roof, and part of the walls, collapsed in 1984. The former bastle (to the right of this range) appeared to have been remodelled in the 1700s although several early features remain in this picture. The building has (observed in 2020) since been converted into a house once again, with some of the external original features retained. Photograph in private ownership.
