Redesdale, Range Firing at Redesdale Camp

  • Description

Redesdale Camp was one of two military establishments created in what is now the Otterburn Training Area. In 1911 a large area of Redesdale (or Rochester) was purchased for an artillery range, being utilised extensively over both world wars. Latterly it was also used by Territorials and Cadets. The original "Redesdale Camp" was bulldozed and re-formed into the rest of the "Otterburn" range in 2008. Anybody wishing further information on the history of Redesdale in general would be well advised to websearch for "Billy Bell bard of Redesdale". In addition, the Mitford family (of the Lord Redesdale lineage) had a colourful past, from being credited to introducing Japanese knotweed to Britain, plus several family members being associated with fascism and indeed Hitler himself.
