  • Description

"The tunnel carries a date stone inscribed 1899. It comprises a 12 foot (3.8m) diameter brick-like structure 1,443 feet (440m) long. Flow is controlled by valves [[6116711]], two on the outlet and two on the scour pipe, embedded in a concrete plug, on top of which is built the tower and valve house [[6062501]] The arch and basin take water for the River Rede (at a minimum agreed rate of about 3 million gallons per day) from the base of the dam at Catcleugh Reservoir. It was built by T and C Hawksley in 1899 for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1156386" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2019.
