Aln Valley Railway yard, Longhoughton (3)

  • Description

"Until closure in 1968, a branch line ran to Alnwick from Alnmouth on the east coast mainline. Now the Aln Valley Railway Society plans to re-open the branch line on the disused trackbed of the branch. The organisation has a base at the site of the former goods yard at Longhoughton on the east coast mainline where track and rolling stock is stored. This photo shows the Aln Valley Railway Society's largest locomotive, an Alco diesel-electric 'switcher' which was imported from the USA in the 1940s and spent most of its working life at Port Talbot steelworks. The loco is in full running order and is being renovated." Photo by Andy F, 2009.
