Pica, West Cumberland, March 1985
-
Description
Pica was built as a pit-village by the Moresby Coal Company in 1880 for the men working the nearby Oatlands pit. The familiar crenellated outline of the houses sits prominently on the view to the westen fells from Workington. The houses on the right, perpendicular to the, er, 'main street', were built in the early part of the 20th Century. Foreground right is the village hall, and the garage on the left, whilst a solitary K6 telephone kiosk stands guard on the southern side of the village. One of the houses on the left used to be a 'parlour-shop', into which I was sent as a child to get some sweets on a Sunday ride out in the car (that's what we did back then...). I was gobsmacked to find myself in someone's sitting-room, but the hesitation evaporated when the lady brought through a jar of mint balls from the back!
