139-157 Grainger Street, Newcastle

  • Description

"Typical of many of the Grainger Town blocks - accented ends and centre with plain linking sections, and all stone-fronted of course. This one, however, is column-less. Building was intense, concentrated in only a few years. This example dates from c1836 and may be the work of two assistants of Richard Grainger, John Wardle and George Walker. Grade II listed. Now part of the Eldon Shopping Centre, in the cause of which modern shopfronts have been installed." Photo by Stephen Richards, 2012.
