Base of WW1 burial memorial, Carlisle Cemetery

  • Description

"Closer view of the monument shown here [[6176421]] . At the top of the front panel it says 'City of Carlisle __ Officers and Men of the Navy and Army who are buried in the Carlisle Cemeteries'. A list of names follows, continuing around the next four panels, of those whose graves are in this cemetery at Richardson Street/Dalston Road. The sixth panel lists those interred at Upperby and Stanwix cemeteries. Details for each of the 145 men named are available from the IWM war memorials register https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/4271 . The double shield on the plinth is the old Carlisle city coat of arms, in use until 1924. About half way up the monument there is a crown, with 'Liberty' inscribed beneath. The words 'Truth' and 'right' are carved on the adjacent sides." Photo by Rose and Trev Clough, 2017.
