Old milestone

  • Description

"One of the 615 posts set up in 1893/94 for the young West Riding CC. In 2010 a lady who lived nearby was sat on the verge painting the red lettering. In the contract the posts were to be painted blue with white lettering but may have quickly changed to black letters on white. Many of the castings for this style of milestone have the foundry name on the bevel but not on the 4 remaining posts on the 5 miles from Sedbergh to the Westmorland (Cumbria) border. A bench mark is on the lower righthand side. Grade II listed 484539." Photo by Chris Minto, 2019.
